Choosing what to wear for family photos can be a challenge. Selecting a color palette that works for everyone and looks good takes some thought and effort!Your outfits can really make the shoot. Choose a style you like and a few colors you like as well. Parents should dress fashionable, yet simple. Focus more of the funky, unique style on the kids. You may think certain colors don’t go together, but think out of the box! I recommend investing in your child’s clothing for this session since it does make a huge difference in the final product.
Here are a few coordinating choices that will look fabulous with fall colors! Pumpkin patches and spiced lattes, you can never go wrong with warm tones for your Autumn shoot.Dark jeans that have grit to them is always a great choice for the parents, especially the husband. Pair them with neutrals for a classic year-round look. Continue to think about texture and color. A neutral palette has a classy, timeless appeal that is especially popular around the Holidays. If you are going to wear a print, stay away from small prints, there is not a lot of visual interest (think bold!). Plaid is no longer lumberjack, it’s edgy and modern!
Pick colors that compliment each other, like bright or deep colors (jewel tones like mustard yellow, deep purple, turquoise, etc) and try to stay away from all white. Don’t forget to accessorize! Try boots, a fedora hat, or a statement jewelry piece to get creative with your look!
As you think about your color palette, imagine your family being one complete piece of artwork. Each person/outfit will bring together a feeling of formality and coordination. Happy planning!
It’s such exciting news that I’m able to announce my new in-home studio space is complete! Whether you’re coming to Sugarlove for a newborn session or a cake smash, my new studio is the perfect place to make you feel right at home. It’s intimate, yet comfortable with plenty of front row seating for the family to watch and enjoy your little one getting their portraits done. Equipped with a glider for nursing moms, plenty of comfy couches, a snack room/play area for toddlers (who aren’t in the shoot) and prop display stations, you’ll find the new studio has everything that you’ll need.
Before it was a studio, it was a family room with bright orange walls. Think Home Depot orange! Yes, it was actually that color (and I loved it). But since orange reflects into skin tones like tang, that was the first thing that had to go. Also bye, bye extra furniture pieces and TV.
Here’s the new studio! A little toasted marshmallow paint really brightened up the room and got the light bouncing all around. I got new curtains & hung the studio samples. Tada!
View of the lounge area.
Props are now organized instead of all over my dining room. Hats, rompers, tutus, baskets… oh my!
Girl & boy racks of hats/pants sets for newborn and toddlers.
And don’t forget all those headbands and tiebacks.
Having your family photos taken and displayed in your home is a great way to create a warm, inviting space for loved ones and friends. Adding your uniquely-stylized art to your walls fills your home with love. Not to mention, who wouldn’t enjoy a daily glimpse of your own adorable children as they are today?
(Please excuse the iPhone photos… I left my big girl camera at home) Thanks C & R for allowing me to share the former ‘Man Cave’ that has been appropriately renamed ‘Family Room’.

September 22, 2011 marks the day that I officially took a career change to follow my dreams in this photography journey full time. I didn’t know where it would take me or if I would succeed, I just knew that I needed to try. Trying to build any business takes a lot of guts and ambition. There have been days that I felt my most vulnerable with doubts, but I credit a very supportive husband and friends that have pushed me along whenever I felt like giving up. Mistakes have been made, all which have helped me grow stronger and more confident in that this is what I should be doing. My most gratifying moments, what keeps me focused is hearing the reaction of my truly appreciative clients. To everyone who has liked my images on Facebook, read my blog, given me love and support with words of encouragement, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Happy 1st Birthday Sugarlove!!!
